Electronic Markets and Merchant Wholesalers: Census Coverage

“A useful market map keeps each classification attached to the evidence that supports it, with an owner for every unresolved company.”

Who sells on their own account, and who represents someone else?
The Census wholesale glossary describes merchant wholesalers as selling goods on their own account. It defines a distributor through buying and taking title before resale. Agents and brokers represent others in negotiating purchases, sales or contracts; they typically receive a fee or commission and do not take possession or title. Ask the proposed counterparty which role it performs in the transaction under review. Save its answer alongside the contracting entity and the document that supports the answer. A marketing description should prompt that enquiry rather than close it.
Does online ordering establish an electronic-market classification?
An online transaction needs its own field. The glossary’s e-commerce definition concerns orders placed, or price and terms negotiated, through an electronic system; payment can occur offline. Its drop-shipment definition separately describes a manufacturer delivering to the customer although a wholesaler makes the sale. These definitions address different features of a transaction. Record the ordering channel, the seller’s role and the fulfilment arrangement separately. Seeing an online order or a direct shipment leaves the population classification to verify; this article provides no rule that assigns a named business to an electronic-market category.
How should a manufacturer’s branch enter the review?
The Census branch and merchant definitions require care together. Manufacturers’ sales branches and offices are establishments maintained apart from the producing plant or mine to market the enterprise’s products. The glossary also includes these branches and offices in its general merchant-wholesaler definition. Treat that vocabulary as context, then check the chosen source’s coverage. In the review record, ask whether the proposed counterparty is an independent reseller or a manufacturer’s sales operation, and retain the evidence. Leave the answer open if the legal entity or operating relationship has not been established.
Which businesses does the monthly source exclude?
The Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey overview states that its coverage excludes manufacturers’ sales branches and offices. It also excludes non-merchant wholesalers such as agents, brokers and electronic markets. That is the source-specific boundary a buyer should carry into a dashboard or market-map note. A category can appear in the general wholesale vocabulary while being excluded from the selected monthly series. Keep the source name visible beside the mapped population so a later reviewer can see which coverage statement was applied.
The same monthly overview retains an older industry-classification reference and legacy survey-design material. This analysis uses its explicit coverage statement only. It makes no claim that every design detail on the page describes the present annual programme. When a team needs a current estimate or a comparison across releases, obtain the methods for those specific releases and retain their definitions. An unresolved comparability question should remain in the record rather than disappear when the figures are copied into a presentation.
What does the annual table catalog establish?
The annual AIES catalog lists a wholesale summary table separately from a table for electronic markets, agents, brokers and commission merchants. The catalog establishes that these named table products are available; it does not by itself establish a platform’s market share or its coverage of a buyer’s supplier universe. Save the chosen table’s title and scope before using its output. Check its actual notes and definitions for the intended comparison instead of treating the catalog heading as a completed analytical result.
The same catalog presents inventory valuation and e-commerce statistics as distinct table products. In the proposed crosswalk, keep the population question separate from the measure being requested. A buyer may need to understand who is represented before deciding whether a sales, inventory or transaction-channel measure answers the sourcing question. This article reports none of those economic levels. Its purpose is to help the reviewer document which population and which measure would need further examination before any calculation could be supported.
Why keep firms, identifiers and sites separate?
The historical annual wholesale methodology describes relationships between multi-unit firms, employer identification numbers and establishments. It explains that a firm can connect to several identifiers and an identifier can connect to several establishments. Use that historical explanation to recognize a possible unit mismatch when comparing a list of supplier sites with a firm-based statistic. For the buyer’s own map, record the contracting legal entity, the operating site and the public reporting unit in separate fields. Do not assume a site count can be substituted for a company count.
That versioned annual method also separates merchant establishments excluding manufacturer branches, the branches themselves, and agents, brokers and business electronic markets when constructing its sampling frame. This is historical classification context. It does not establish the present integrated annual programme’s implementation. Preserve the method version with the classification explanation, and seek the current table’s own documentation when a current comparison is required. The crosswalk should expose that missing step before the analyst combines populations or labels a residual group as a market opportunity.
How can a buyer build an auditable population crosswalk?
- Create a proposed own-account merchant row when the transaction records support resale on the seller’s account. Record the title evidence and the contracting entity; keep any separate fulfilment arrangement visible.
- Create a proposed representative row when the records support acting for another party. Save the represented party, the role in the sale and the fee or commission explanation. An incomplete answer remains unresolved.
- Keep a separate manufacturer-branch review row when the operating relationship requires it. Record the parent relationship and the evidence still needed before applying a source-specific inclusion or exclusion.
- Treat an electronic-market label as a classification question requiring documentation. Keep online ordering in its own channel field, then obtain the source definitions and counterparty evidence needed to support the proposed business-role mapping.
- Retain an unmapped-company row when the evidence cannot resolve the role, entity or reporting unit. Give it an owner, the missing document and a review date. Keep it outside any classified total until the mapping is supported.
This is an authored review method, not a Census classification service or a tested accuracy threshold. For each proposed row, preserve the source version, commercial document, reviewer and unresolved question. Connect material uncertainty to a supplier risk review when it affects the buying decision. Use the supplier relationship governance guide to plan the evidence conversation. Keep other market-method questions in the Journal reading queue, with a clear distinction between published context and the records needed for this counterparty.
What should an automated market map be allowed to conclude?
Frequently asked questions
Can a general merchant-wholesaler definition determine monthly survey coverage?
Read the specific coverage statement as well. The monthly overview excludes manufacturer sales branches and offices and non-merchant wholesalers, including agents, brokers and electronic markets. Keep those exclusions with the series used in the market map.
Does an online order prove the seller belongs to an electronic-market population?
The e-commerce definition describes how an order is placed or price and terms are negotiated, with payment possibly offline. It does not supply an individual-company classification. Record the transaction channel separately and obtain evidence of the seller’s role.
Can historical annual methods be treated as the current annual survey design?
The versioned annual methodology supplies historical population and reporting-unit context. Use it with that limitation and obtain the relevant current documentation for a present-day comparison. Do not carry old sample design into a current annual claim.
Does the annual catalog measure a platform’s supplier coverage?
The AIES index identifies available table products and their named scope. That is insufficient to establish a platform’s supplier-directory coverage or classify a named business. Such a claim needs its own matched population, definitions and evidence.
