OVERVIEW

Category Overview

Packaging procurement includes primary packaging (bottles, cans, cartons, flexible packaging), secondary packaging (corrugated, display packaging), tertiary packaging (pallets, stretch wrap, strapping), and packaging services (contract packaging, labeling, kitting). For consumer goods, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical manufacturers, packaging can represent 5–20% of product cost.

Packaging is also a category under structural transformation: sustainability requirements are reshaping material specifications, supply chain concentration is creating resilience risk, and new converters and material innovations are expanding the competitive landscape.

THE CHALLENGE

Why This Category Is Undercompeted

Supplier concentration and regional lock-in

Packaging spend frequently concentrates with regional suppliers whose geographic proximity or tooling investment creates switching barriers. This concentration reduces competitive pressure.

Specification complexity

Packaging specifications — dimensions, materials, print specifications, performance requirements — can be complex enough to deter alternative suppliers from bidding without active engagement.

Tooling and setup cost barriers

Switching packaging suppliers involves tooling and setup costs that incumbents use to justify pricing above market. Competitive sourcing that accounts for switching costs in the total cost analysis enables genuine comparison.

THE SOLUTION

How Zinit's AI-Native Platform Unlocks Savings

103M-Supplier Network

Includes packaging manufacturers and converters across geographies and material types that most procurement teams have never engaged. AI supplier matching surfaces qualified alternatives based on specification requirements — including sustainable packaging alternatives and regional converters in new geographies.

Specification Rationalization

Packaging specifications are often more complex than product requirements demand. Simplifying specifications — standardizing sizes, reducing custom colors, consolidating substrates — reduces tooling costs and increases the number of qualified suppliers who can bid.

Volume Aggregation Opportunity

Packaging categories purchased by multiple business units or facilities without aggregation miss volume leverage. Cross-facility aggregation analysis reveals bundling opportunity.

Supplier Concentration Analysis

Spend concentration with a small number of regional suppliers reveals resilience risk and competitive opportunity. Introducing alternative suppliers — even for a portion of volume — creates pricing transparency that motivates incumbent improvement.

Sustainability Specification Integration

Sustainability requirements — recycled content, recyclability, carbon footprint — are increasingly material to packaging specifications. Competitive sourcing that integrates sustainability criteria enables cost and sustainability objectives to be pursued simultaneously.
